These abstract paintings are in keeping with painting the world at my feet--a fascination with texture & the surface of things. The mixed media for these paintings combines acrylic, watercolor, & colored pencil.

Water is strongly associated with blessing: lushness, greenness, refreshment, healing, fecundity & fruitfulness. This came home to me very viscerally after visiting Southern California in drought conditions. The absence of rain water made everything feel parched & oppressive. These waterscapes, done in colored pencil, represent experiences of renewal for me.

My non-representational imagery has been on a a slow simmer. Sensory input has been an engine in my work, but I also have appreciated how authors, theologians, essayists have tutored me in a larger backstory of meaning.

This watercolor series has taken me two decades to finish. The first inspiration came to me while standing by the Huron River looking down at the fall leaves at my feet. Even though the bright reds and yellows were eye catching, I was equally captured by the decaying leaves. Working with my photos, I came to appreciate the forest floor’s economy using up all of that rich “fallen” nature over a life cycle & transforming it into fresh verdancy.
